The Impact of Self-Management on Leadership and Teamwork
In the last blog we looked at why it’s so important to be clear on our identity and purpose. This week, as part of my Future You at Work model, we’ll focus on the precursors to developing great social and emotional intelligence for dealing with others: self-awareness and self-management.
In many of my previous blogs we’ve established that self-awareness is a clear understanding of who you are, your personality, your values, beliefs, strengths, weaknesses etc and how others perceive you. It’s an essential tool for successful leadership and effective teamwork and it’s a trait that all people (as well as managers) should strive to attain.
People who foster self-awareness tend to:
- develop tools for leveraging their strengths and confronting their weaknesses
- earn credibility and cultivate relationships based on trust and respect
- remain open to new ideas, inquiry and constructive criticism
Emotionally self-aware leaders
Emotionally self-aware leaders use their values to make decisions and are able to speak openly about their emotions. Let’s assume that this IS you (I hope so!).
Let’s move now to how you will manage yourself (before you even think about managing others) as the world of work changes around you. Good self-management means having great emotional self-control but (as highlighted by Daniel Goleman’s model of EI) when it comes to the work context it also means having a strong achievement orientation, a positive outlook and, crucially, adaptability.
Emotional self-control: Leaders with this skill remain calm and clear-thinking in stressful situations and hold on to their emotional balance
Achievement orientation: Leaders who hold themselves and others to high standards. They work toward challenging and measurable goals. They continually seek ways to improve their performance and that of their team.
Positive outlook: These leaders see every situation as an opportunity, even those that may look like a setback to others. They see other people positively and expect them to do their best. They expect the changes in the future to be for the better.
Adaptability: They handle many demands while staying focused on their goals. Uncertainty is both expected and comfortable for these leaders. They flex in response to new challenges and are quick to adjust to sudden changes.
